Cobe, Inflation, and Light Scalars

چکیده

Comparison of the COBE observed quadrupole anisotropy with that predicted in adiabatic CDM models suggests that much of the observed signal may be due to long wavelength gravitational waves. In inflationary models this requires the generation of tensor fluctuations to be at least comparable to scalar density fluctuations. This is feasible, but depends sensitively on the inflaton potential. Alternatively, isocurvature quantum fluctuations in an axion-like field could produce a quadrupole anisotropy proportional to the gravitational wave anisotropy, independent of the inflaton potential. These could also produce large scale structure with more power on larger scales than their adiabatic counterparts. Bitnet: Krauss@Yalehep. Research supported in part by the NSF,DOE, and TNRLC

INFLATION AFTER COBE Lectures on Inflationary Cosmology∗

In these lectures I review the standard hot big-bang cosmology, emphasizing its successes, its shortcomings, and its major challenge—a detailed understanding of the formation of structure in the Universe. I then discuss the motivations for—and the fundamentals of—inflationary cosmology, particularly emphasizing the quantum origin of metric (density and gravity-wave) perturbations. Inflation add...

Hierarchically Split Supersymmetry with Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms in String Theory

We show that in string theory or supergravity with supersymmetry breaking through combined F-terms and Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms, the masses for charged scalars and fermions can be hierarchically split. The mass scale for the gauginos and higgsinos of the MSSM is controlled by the gravitino mass m3/2, as usual, while the scalars get extra contributions from the D-terms of extra abelian U(1) fact...

Cosmic microwave background probes models of inflation.

Inflation creates both scalar (density) and tensor (gravity wave) metric perturbations. We find that the tensor mode contribution to the CMB anisotropy on large-angular scales can only exceed that of the scalar mode in models where the spectrum of perturbations deviates significantly from scale invariance (e.g., extended and power-law inflation models and extreme versions of chaotic inflation)....

COBE, Gravitational Waves, Inflation and Extended Inflation

We analyse the implications for inflationary models of the cosmic microwave background (cmb) anisotropy measured by COBE. Vacuum fluctuations during inflation generate an adiabatic density perturbation, and also gravitational waves. The ratio of these two contributions to the cmb anisotropy is given for an arbitrary slow-roll inflaton potential. Results from the IRAS/QDOT and POTENT galaxy surv...

Two-Stage Inflation as a Solution to the Initial Condition Problem of Hybrid Inflation

We address the issue of fine-tuning of the initial field configuration that can lead to hybrid inflation in the context of global supersymmetry. This problem is generated by the difference between the energy scale at which the Universe emerges from the Planck era and the inflationary scale implied by the COBE observations: V 1/4 ∼ 10−3mPl. We propose a scenario with two stages of inflation. The...
